Get Shorty

I finally got to see this John Travolta movie of an Elmore Leonard novel about a mob collector by the name of Chili Palmer, who heads to Los Angeles in search of a guy and the money he owes and is given another job to get some money out of a movie producer played by Gene Hackman.  Gene is also being funded by a guy who is connected to drug money.
So, let's try and keep up: Chili was working for a guy who dies at his surprise 65th birthday party, so now he is working for a bloke who's 2IC is Ray 'Bones' Barboni (played by Dennis Farina) who Chili beat up and shot at the beginning of the film.  He wants Chili to collect from a dry cleaner's widow some money the dry cleaner owed, but he died in a plane crach.  Chili finds out he isn't dead but winning big in Las Vegas with the money.  Chili goes to find him and is told he's gone to LA and while he's out there can he collect from Gene Hackman's Harry Zimm.  How are you going?  Keeping Up?  Not finished yet!
Chili hunts Harry down at his girlfriend, Karen's (played by Rene Russo) house and while talking about the money, Chili pitches an idea for a movie based on him trying to collect the dry cleaner's money!  Harry tells Chili about a big movie he wants to make but the script writer died and the widow wants half a million dollars for the script.  He also needs a big name star in Martin Weir, played by Danny DeVito, who just happens to be Karen's ex husband. So the dry cleaner has $300,000 and there is also a further $500,000 of drug money sitting in a locker at the airport, but it's being watched by the feds.
Harry invites Bones to LA to invest in the movie but all he wants is his $300,000 and the drug lord, Mr Escobar, played by Medium's Miguel Sandoval, has come to LA to track down his $500,000.
So, understand?  James Gandolfini also played a stuntman/bodyguard with a heart.
This is a very convoluted story but is fun to try and keep up with.  What happened to Mr Escobar though? This is a fun look at the movie making business and they like to make fun of themselves by putting actors down all the time.  John Travolta does a great job as Chili Palmer.  As Chili says, "Look at me" and you should enjoy this. 7/10.
