The Reader

##Please Note - Major Spoilers Below.  If You Have Not Seen This Film, Just Do It And Then Come Back And Tell Me What You Think.##

Stephen Daldrey (Billy Elliot) has crafted a slow burn of a film that starts out as one type of story and evolves into something much more.
Young German actor, David Kross, plays Michael suffering from scarlet fever and vomiting in an alley way.  He is cared for by a kind stranger named Hanna played by the beautiful Kate Winslet.  After his recuperation, he returns to Hanna's to thank her and disturbingly, they begin a passionate sexual affair, even though he is under age and she is about twice his!  I have to say, I felt a bit uncomfortable watching these scenes.  Imagine if it was an older man with a young girl, it would have been banned, but for some reason, this was acceptable.
As part of their relationship, Hanna loves it when Michael reads to her.  She gets him to read the books he must read for school and then any books he can get.  Hanna works as a tram conductor and is so good at what she does, they decide to promote her to working in the office, which she does not want to do so she leaves without saying goodbye.
Years late, Michael is a university student studying law and while on a class outing to view the War Crimes Tribunal, he comes across Hanna again, this time as one of a number of women accused of atrocious crimes, one of which was not releasing Jewish prisoners from a burning church.  It becomes clear that Hanna does not have a full understanding of what she has done and quickly the other accused women claim she was the leader and that she wrote a report that spells out what happened.  When asked to provide a sample of her handwriting, instead, she admits to everything.
However, it is now clear that Hanna is illiterate.  That is why she loved Michael reading to her, because she could not read herself and she left her job because she could not read nor write.  Her immature pride and inability to understand the full implications of her confession commit her to prison for the majority of her life.
All through the film, we see Michael as an adult played by the wonderfully understated Ralph Fiennes.  At the time of the trials, he could have helped Hanna and let the authorities know that she is illiterate but he is torn between  so many feelings and emotions.  How can he have been with this woman, loved this woman, and she was capable of such horror?  He tries to visit her but backs out at the last minute.  Later in life, he decides to record one of the books he read to her.  She loves it and wants more.  Then she realises, she can borrow the book from the prison library and follow the words with the recording.  Eventually she teaches herself how to read and write.  She starts to write to Michael and he pulls back leaving her alone in her world again.  Many years later, she has earned her release and Michael is the only person they have as a contact for Hanna and they ask him to help her adjust to life on the outside.  He reluctantly sets up an apartment but on the day she is to be released, she commits suicide.
Did she not want to face the outside?  With her literacy, did she also gain an understanding of her crimes and her culpability?
It is Michael who is left to contemplate what he has lost.  What could he have done differently?  He takes his daughter to places Hanna and he visited during their romance and he keeps her memory alive by telling his daughter of her.
This is a VERY slow movie but stick with it, it will reward you.  A sad story and I would have liked a happier ending,  but it was based on a book.  Brilliantly acted and Kate deserved every reward she received. 8/10

NCIS: Los Angeles - Rocket Man

Eric finally gets to get out into the field in what is a pretty run of the mill episode as we get closer to the season finale.
A rocket scientists is trapped in a room with some radioactive material while undergoing some tests for a commercial launch that will either make or break his company.  He is killed and his daughter takes over to try to keep the launch on schedule.
The NCIS team investigate to find out who was responsible for the scientist's death.
Eric even falls for the same trap but he is saved before permanent damage is done.
Not one of the team's best episodes.

Bedazzled

You can almost see the executives sitting around the table: "So, what can we remake next?"  Some bright spark says, "Hey, does anyone remember that old classic with Dudley Moore and Peter Cooke, Bedazzled, where Cooke plays the Devil and gives Dudley Moore seven wishes in exchange for his soul?"  After some encouraging "Of course I've seen it" remarks from some who have obviously never even heard of the film but didn't want to look like they weren't 'in the know', the bright spark says, "But this time, we could have a woman play the Devil!  Why not Elizabeth Hurley?  She's hot and a bit naughty!  And we could have Brendan Fraser play the Dudley Moore part!"  "Brilliant!" they cried!  And that's how this movie got green lit (well probably!)
Anyway, a lot of people panned this movie (those that loved the original and those that hadn't but didn't want to let on that they hadn't and half of these people hadn't even seen this version!) but it's really not as bad as everyone made out.
Brendan plays a complete dweeb who wants the good looking chick at work and The Devil overhears him and offers to exchange seven wishes for his soul, which he agrees to.  Trouble is, being the Devil, she's a bit of a bitch and every wish gets twisted to Brendan's disadvantage!  The set pieces are uncomfortably funny; a Colombian Drug Lord (good!), an over-sensitive man (annoying), a 'huge' basketball player (hilarious) and a successful writer (very cruel but brilliant!  In fact this joke makes the movie!).  When things are looking their worst, God is there to save him.  While he doesn't get what he wants, he gets what he needs.  Isn't that what we all want?
I didn't mind this and actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would.  Brendan Fraser does a great job of inhabiting all these different characters and Elizabeth is HOT as The Devil.  A good bit of fun! 6/10

Burn Notice - Eyes Open

Burn Notice is back with a new season!  Or is it??  Upon investigation, this episode is actually number 13 of season four!  Jipped!  (And for some reason, channel ten Australia only showed two episodes, took it off the air for quite a while again and then started with episode 15 on the HD channel 'One' - I am little bit behind but I am catching up!)
Starting off from where the last episode finished with Jesse shooting Michael to save him and Michael being in a car accident with Barrett (who is then killed) and then Simon's Bible going missing (someone walks away with it), Michael wakes in a hospital bed.
Michael is played by Jeffrey Donovan (Changeling), his girlfriend (well, sometimes) is played by Gabrielle Anwar (The Three Musketeers) and Michael's best friend is none other than Bruce Campbell (the Evil Dead).  The list of guest stars for this show is pretty extraordinary as well.
Anyway, this episode sees Michael having to deal with the lawyer from the last episode who is actually a bit of a bad guy anyway, Vaughan says he has had a enough and is doing a runner for his own safety and Jesse agrees to stay on and help find the Bible.
The lawyer had hired a psychotic mad man (is there any other?) that loves to make bombs to get his revenge and Michael must act like he thinks the guy is brilliant and is an acolyte so he can find out where the bomb is planted, all with a bullet wound and his car accident injuries.
I absolutely love this show!  Can't wait to start buying it on DVD and watching them all back to back.

Supernatural - Let It Bleed

In the penultimate episode for season six, the way is made clear for he finale to take place.  Crowley abducts Lisa and Ben and warn Dean to stay out of his plans or he will kill them.  This only spurs him on.  In their investigations into purgatory, they discover the writer H.P. Lovecraft wrote a manuscript about purgatory before he died and gathered some people one night to open it for them.  Everyone who attended that night has died or gone insane, except for a little boy who was there.  He is now an old man and Bobby visits him discovering that his mother is none other than his old love Ellie, who is older than she looks!  She knows how to open purgatory and is being hunted by Crowley and Castiel but is protected while inside her safe house.
Meanwhile, Balthazar, who previously told Castiel he would support him, transports Sam and Dean to where Crowley has Lisa and Ben held hostage, only to find she has been taken over by a demon.  Dean tries to exorcise the demon who then stabs itself, that is, Lisa's body.  Dean succeeds in releasing the demon and rushes Lisa to a hospital.  Castiel arrives and heals her wound and Dean asks that he wipes Lisa and Ben's minds of all memory of him.  Now they can no longer be used against him.  The episode ends with Ellie leaving her safe house only to discover Castiel waiting for her.  Cas now has the means to open purgatory.  What is going to happen in the final episode?  Can't wait!

NCIS: Los Angeles - The Job

A world renowned thief is trying to get something from a secure military site but a member of his team makes a mistake and the plan goes wrong.  Kensi goes undercover as a thief to try and infiltrate his team by breaking into his home to get what she is owed by one of his employees.  Instead of punishing her, he shoots the employee in cold blood!  Kensi is getting more involved and when they discover that the their has been seeing a director from a museum that deals in ancient art they think they have worked it out but the thief wants to clean his tracks and sets off a bomb to blow up his house and everyone in it.  The boys from NCIS witness the explosion and think Kensi has been killed but the their grabbed Kensi just before the explosion and jumped into the pool to escape the blast.  Clever.  Suffice to say, Kensi catches her man in the end.  A really great explosive episode!

NCIS: Los Angeles - Enemy Within

There is a Venezuelan politician who is pro-US who is to visit America and is of course a target for assassination.  The twist is that a US government employee has been studying the politician's speeches and believes he is lying and is an actual threat to the US, especially if he was to win power.  This employee goes missing and thus becomes the prime suspect in the assassination plot.  But is it ever this simple?
Not a bad episode but pretty run-of-the-mill.  I am sure there will be bigger stories to come as we race towards the season finale.

Flipped

Does lightning ever strike twice?  There was a big tree in this film that could have drawn the lightning if it wasn't cut down?  Rob Reiner who made the coming of age story Stand By Me, tries his hand again at a story of young people but for some reason this little film just doesn't quite hit the high marks that were expected of it.
It's not the cast either.  They all do a fantastic job.  The actors include Anthony Edwards (what a mongrel!), his wife Rebecca De Mornay (a long way from Risky Business), his Dad, John Mahoney and the neighbours Aiden Quinn and Penelope Ann Miller.  The two kids central to this movie are up and coming stars of the future Madeline Carroll and Australian Callan McAulliffe.  Keep an eye on these two!
The handling of the story is the problem, because it is a little slow and it keeps going over the same ground but from different character's perspectives, which frankly gets annoying.  Which is a shame really because it is quite a touching idea.
Bryce moves into a new neighbourhood as a young man and IMMEDIATELY makes the girl, Juli, who lives over the road fall in love with him.  Not that he did anything.  She's a little more mature than most kids her age.  She keeps chickens so she can sell the eggs and tries to protect trees, one in particular and loves to sit in it and look at the view.  She is a very deep thinker.
The spin to the story is that as Bryce grows up and starts to mature himself, he realises that Juli isn't as strange as he thought and that perhaps he has been making a huge mistake all his life. Trouble is, Juli has 'flipped' as well and come to the realisation that Bryce is shallow and not worthy of her love.  From that point, it's how Bryce tries to make amends for all the wrongs he has done.  And it is a tree that ultimately could bring them together.
This should have been a better film, and probably deserves to be seen by more people. It's not a great movie but it's not bad either. 6/10

Tron Legacy - Original Soundtrack

I was so excited to see this film and then I found out that Daft Punk were doing the entire soundtrack.  I was surprised at such a bold move and interested to hear how this would sound, but I was incredibly surprised and I can easily say this is one of my favourite soundtracks now.  I listen to this over and over now.  I even caught my youngest daughter with it on her iPod and when I asked her why she had Tron, her response was "It's so Techno, Dad!"
Yes it is, but it is also an amalgam of techno with classical film soundtracks with some lovely strings (which I am sure are probably created on a keyboard).  There is a wonderful theme running throughout but I must single out my all time favourite piece is Adagio for Tron which is hauntingly beautiful and incredibly sad.  This is such a different sound for me and I just love it!  Please, give this a go!

Michael Buble - Totally Buble

I have always been keen for cool swing/lounge style, like Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin and when I discovered Michael Buble, I thought, finally I can 'come out' about my love for jazz and big band music!  I had one album at the time (his 'deut' self titled album) and my wife bought me a CD player for my car and when I was getting it fitted at JB HiFi, I started looking at what CDs I wanted to buy to listen to while driving (there was no such think as an iPod guys!) and I discovered 'Totally Buble'!  Here is an older album than his 'debut'!  It only had seven songs on it but I hadn't heard him sing any of them before so I bought it.  Michael's voice is a little less mature on this album compared to his studio albums.  However, I soon discovered that it is really a soundtrack of sorts to a movie called 'Totally Blonde' in which Michael co-stars in!  He's a bit of an actor too (I also just found out he was in two episodes of The X-Files!!  I must rewatch!) and sang these songs in the movie.  Apparently (as per Wikipedia), he didn't want these songs to be released but the owners of the rights saw a good thing and jumped right on board.  There are a couple of standout songs on the album, 'That's How It Goes' and 'Peroxide Swing' are brilliant as is 'Me & Mrs. You'.  The other half of the album is still good, just not the brilliant.  I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on it, but if you are a completist or just a fan, this is a must have album.  (I believe there are also a couple of other 'pre-debut' albums out there so I am going to try and track them down to.)  Enjoy, totally!

Kelly Clarkson - Thankful

Thankful is the beautiful Kelly Clarkson's debut album and I am surprised to find myself writing about it here in my movie blog, so let's get that bit out of the way first.  You see the first song on the album,  "The Trouble With Love Is" was the Love Theme from the movie 'Love Actually'!
While I love Kelly, this is the least loved of her albums, but it was her debut.  Most of it doesn't sound like her as she sounds on her later albums.  In fact, when I first heard this album, I thought it was being sung by an incredibly talented African American R&B singer! However, there are some typically gold Kelly Clarkson songs here that I just love to listen to over and over: 'Miss Independent', 'Beautiful Disaster', but going against the grain, the two best songs are the last ones on the album.  'A Moment Like This' was one of the songs released when she won American Idol, which is just wonderful.  The very last song, 'Before Your Love' is my favourite.  The chorus is just brilliant!
While it is not my favourite Kelly Clarkson album, it does have a couple of brilliant songs that make this a must have in your collection.

Robbie Williams - Swing When You're Winning

I am a huge fan of Robbie Williams and when I found he had created a swing album, I was sceptical, but I have to say how incredibly impressed I am by this album.  There is some old favourites and some newer songs with a modern swing.
I will first mention the duet he does with Australian actress Nicole Kidman, "Somethin' Stupid" which I think is a great remake.  She has a slight voice which is perfect to marry with Robbie Williams.  The first song on the album is "I Will Talk And Hollywood Will Listen", which I believe is a song about Nicole's ex-husband, Tom Cruise.
Some of the old favourites include "Mack The Knife", "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me", "Mr. Bojangles", "Ain't That a Kick In The Head" and "Have You Met Miss Jones?"
Like Celine Dion, there is a great duet with the legend Frank Sinatra, "It Was A Very Good Year"; a very funny song with the comedian Jon Lovitz where they do "Well, Did You Evah"; and a funny version of "Things" with Jane Horrocks - love the banter at the end.
The movie link is that he did a cover of "Beyond The Sea" which played over the end credits to the Disney Pixar Movie, 'Finding Nemo'.  What a great way to introduce my kids to Robbie Williams and some classic songs all in one hit!
Just a little tip.  Make sure you stay listening after the last song or fast forward (don't jump tracks) as there is a little behind the scenes bonus for Robbie Fans.
Love this album, one of my favourites!  Enjoy!

Family Guy - Blue Harvest

I have not been a huge fan of Family Guy (it's a bit too risque for this guy's family!), but when I heard they were doing a parody of Star Wars I knew I had to see it.  The title, Blue Harvest, was the title used when filming Return Of The Jedi to put nosy people off finding out about the movie and releasing details to the public before the movie was released.  Remember it was before the Internet!
Anyway, when the power goes out and Peter keeps the family entertained by telling the story of the film, Star Wars.  We get to see it with the characters of Family Guy in all the key roles.
There are a number of very funny jokes, but I have to say, some of them just fall flat.  The animation is fun with some excellent rotoscoping straight from the film.  It was good that it has George Lucas' blessing.
This was not as funny as I thought it would be but I am going to wait to see all three installments and see if it works better that way and whether I should pick up a copy on Blu Ray.  I suppose every Star Wars fan should really have this, even if it is just for the sake of the collection.  I hope the next one marries The Empire Strikes Back and is better.

Supernatural - The Man Who Would Be King

After the end of the Eve storyline, the final storyline for the season and the set up for season seven gets to be explained to us to help 'catch us up'.  Castiel narrates the events of this episode and his reasons for doing what he is doing.  We see Castiel is not completely under Crowley's control when Crowley insists that Castiel kill Sam and Dean.  Castiel refuses but then makes it violently clear that Crowley is NOT to touch them.  Crowley is amused that he is still loyal to them when they are not loyal to him.  Castiel makes himself invisible and listens in on the boys and Bobby talking and realises that Crowley may be right.  When he does appear to the boys after killing demons sent to get them, he accidentally lets slip words that the boys used while Cas was invisible, revealing that he was listening in and perhaps cannot be trusted.
Castiel reveals in his narration that it was he who started the civil war in heaven because Rafael wanted to release Lucifer and Michael and get the Apocalypse happening the way it was meant to.  He will do anything to stop that from happening.
The boys trap Castiel and ask him if he is working with Crowley but he can't look Dean in the eye.  Demons are coming so the boys escape and Crowley shows up to release Castiel saying once again the Winchesters must be eliminated.
Cas shows himself to Dean hoping to get his support and allegiance.  Dean tells him he is like a brother to him and asks that he not work with Crowley.  When Cas refuses, Dean says he will do everything he can to stop him.  Alone, Castiel asks God to give him a sign to show him the right path, but God is once again silent.
A solid episode that was good to bring everyone up to the same page and understand why Castiel was doing what he was doing.  You also understand that the boys agree with what he is doing but it must be done without the help of Crowley or it is all wrong.  Our gang is fighting amongst themselves and not working together.  Will they be able to work through their differences in time?

Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music - Streetlife

Growing up in the 80's afforded me access to some of what I consider the best music ever created.  I am especially fond of music from The Romantics Period of which Bryan Ferry & Roxy music fall within.  I loved Bryan Ferry's mix of styles with his music, sometimes, bobby pop, sometimes slow romance, other times, unusual alternative and while other times, harking back to the musical styles of the 20's and 30's.
My first car had a cool cassette player in it with stereo speakers in the back (yeah, I know that sounds lame now but it was cool back then!) and so I had to have the best 'Best Of' for Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music and I found it in 'Streetlife'.  This cassette got played over and over and at times was the soundtrack to events in my life.  It's been a long time since I have had a working cassette player, so on a whim I looked up the album in iTunes and it was on special at the time so I quickly snapped it up and I was so surprised when I found I remembered so many words for songs I had not heard for more than twenty years!  But why am I prattling on about this obscure Best Of album on my blog?  Because many of these songs have been used in films.  I found a wonderful list on roxyrama.com and I want to acknowledge and thank them for compiling this list.  While Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music have had a lot of music in films, I will only list those off Streetlife.

  • The quirky 'Virginia Plain' shows up in both "The Velvet Goldmine" and "The Filth and The Fury";
  • 'Do The Strand' from "Maybe Baby";
  • 'Let's Stick Together' from "Mickey Blue Eyes";
  • 'Love Is The Drug' is in "The Stud", "Casino" and "Solitaire For Two";
  • The wonderful 'Same Old Scene' was in "Times Square";
  • 'In The Midnight Hour' was in "Indecent Proposal";
  • 'More Than This' is in "200 Cigarettes";
  • and lastly 'Slave To Love' which has shown up in a massive five films, "9 1/2 Weeks", "Fire With Fire", "Malice", "Exit To Eden" and "Bitter Moon".
Some of my all time favourite songs also show up on this album, including 'These Foolish Things',  'Dance Away', 'Over You', and 'Avalon'.  A great Best Of Album and I fully recommend it.

The Illusionist

This is not the French animated film from last year but the Edward Norton magician film that was released in 2006.  As regularly occurs in Hollywood, while one studio is making a certain type of film, a rival studio is making a similar film in competition.  For example, Dante's Peak and Volcano, A Bug's Life and Antz, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica.  In the same year, Christopher Nolan released his magician film, The Prestige, which I really enjoyed.  Starring Australia's Hugh Jackman and the cast of Batman Begins, it had a really wonderfully dark twist to the end of the film but I think it ended on a negative note with an ambiguity to the main characters in that who was the good guy and who was the bad guy?
Not so with The Illusionist.  Oh yes, Edward Norton is brilliant in playing ambiguous characters and he plays his part well here.  The story is of a young boy of lowly heritage who begins to learn magic while falling in love with the local Duchess.  When they are torn apart by the police, our hero, Eduard Eisenheim, travels to China to learn more about being a great magician.  Many years later, he returns to Vienna, as the VERY successful Eisenheim the Illusionist, and discovers his long lost love is about to become the wife of Crown Prince Leopold.  After discovering that the Prince has a reputation for brutality towards women and a plan to usurp his father, Eisenheim puts a plan in to action to save his Sophie.
Throughout the film, he is investigated by Inspector Uhl, played brilliantly by the wonderful actor, Paul Giamatti.  Who's side is he on?  What does he get for working for the Prince?
The film starts with Inspector Uhl about to arrest Eisenheim for continuing to raise the spirits of the dead, (in this case the 'spirit' of the Sophie) which he does VERY convincingly.  Is it real or is it illusion?
This is a wonderfully made film.  It's techniques of sepia tones and iris fades give it an late 19th century feel, the acting is exceptional and the story is fantastic.  Of course there is a twist to the tale and it is half the fun trying to figure it out.  This would have to be one of Jessica Biel's best performances.  I really loved this film and I think it is better than The Prestige.  I can't think of anything I wrong with this film.  I give it 10/10.

Race To Witch Mountain

Back in the 70's, Disney made a couple of movies based on a book, Escape To Witch Mountain.  Now, over thirty years later, Disney has 'reimagined' the story for a new generation of kids, Race To Witch Mountain.
Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, is the main star, playing a Las Vegas cabbie that the two alien children decide to hitch a ride in to get to where they need to be.  He is a reformed criminal who is fighting the crime bosses as he has turned his back on crime.  Among his other customers, he delivers Carla Gugino's gorgeous scientist (Sorry, but I just love Carla!) to a UFO convention that is happening in town.
The story of the aliens is that their parents had come to earth to find a way of helping their planet without having to invade, which is what their leaders want to do.  They had crashed their ship which is now being held by the US Government in Witch Mountain.  They need to retrieve a handheld device from a building in the middle of nowhere and that's where The Rock comes in!  The kids are also being pursued by an alien assassin sent by their world's leaders to stop them from thwarting their plans.
Dwayne needs Carla's help to get the kids to Witch Mountain and their ship.
This is a typical Disney film, light family-friendly fair but with some special effects and action thrown in.  This is a good thing and I am sure the kids love this film but for adults, it's probably a little too light.
Some fun trivia has the original child aliens cameo in the film as a sheriff and a waitress, and our heroes use the UFO expertise of the half-crazy Garry Marshall (Happy Days, Pretty Woman) who drives a Winnebago which is the same make, model and colour as the one used by Eddie Albert's character in the original movie! (Thanks for that one IMDB!) These are nice touches as a nod to the original movie.
I am sure that due to the financial success of this film, there will be a remake of the sequel, Return To Witch Mountain.  I have to say, I like this story better than the original, though it had the cool reveal that the kids were aliens late in the film.  The acting was OK and some of the effects were pretty cool, like when the boy stops a vehicle with his body. (A similar effect was done in The X-Files back in the day!)  This is not a bad film but not great.  6/10

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

My earliest memory of listening to this album was at a high school party after finishing grade 12.  I have never been one to like anything that I felt was not mainstream.  But I was mesmerised by this alternative music.  Everyone at the party was singing along to the songs and the album got replayed a few times during the night.  Of course I had to buy it and I still own my original 33 vinyl record.  Now it is almost thirty years later and I found a copy of the album on CD and have put it on my iPhone's iPod.  This is the recording of a live concert that was made into a film directed by none other than Jonathan Demme, the director of Silence Of The Lambs!  The most memorable part of the 'movie' is David Byrne coming out in the incredibly oversized suit.  Visually it was striking and his movements to Girlfriend Is Better make the suit move in strange ways.  This is my favourite song on the album but really, every song on this album is simply brilliant though I am especially fond of the old staples, Psycho Killer, Burning Down The House and Take Me To The River.  If you only own one Talking Heads album, it must be Stop Making Sense.

House - Moving On

The season finale of House sees Cuddy talking to a police officer outside her house saying that if House comes anywhere near her, he is to be arrested.  Whoa!  What's led to this?
Firstly, the main story is the usual medical conundrum that the team face except this time the patient is a performance artist who is secretly recording her treatment for her art. House discovers that she is dying and that she is making herself even more sick for the benefit of the video.  After doing what he does best, he discovers that she isn't dying and convinces her to get better.
Taub has been dodging calls from his ex-wife because now he's going to become a Dad to his girlfriend, but he ex-wife turns up at the hospital to tell him she is now pregnant to him (as they have been having sex on the side!).  Oh My!  What is he to do now??
So back to House.  Cuddy asks him to return a brush she left at his apartment when they were together. Meanwhile, her sister has been trying to set her up with a date and she eventually relents to having him over for dinner as a foursome.  It just happens to be the day House decides he will try and get back with Cuddy.  He drives over to her house with Wilson but then sees her with the other man.  He demands Wilson get out of the car and drives off, before turning the car around and smashing it into the Cuddy's dining room, luckily with no one in it.  House steps out of the car, hands her the brush and walks away.  The episode and the season, ends with House on a tropical beach somewhere.  Where to from here?

House - After Hours

This is one of the best episodes of House for some time for House's character.  The story started in last week's episode continues with House discovering that the experimental drug is killing the lab rats with cancerous tumours.  After checking himself, he discovers three tumours on his leg muscle and so he goes home and sets up his bathroom as an operating room and commences removing the tumours himself.  The special effects here are amazing.  The pain is excruciating and he can't complete the procedure, so he calls his team but no one answers, he calls Wilson and still no luck.  As a last resort he calls Cuddy, who comes to help him and gets him to the hospital to have the tumours removed.  House realises that something has to change in his life.
Meanwhile, Thirteen has a fellow prison inmate turn up at her door with a stab wound who wants Thirteen to fix it but not take her to the hospital.  Thirteen gets Chase to bring some equipment from the hospital and he decides to stay and help.  The patient has hepatitis C and of course nothing goes right and they eventually take to the hospital to save her life.
Taub finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant with his child.  He is not sure how he feels about this and he goes to a strip joint where he sees a mole on a stripper but gets thrown out trying to touch it.  He waits outside for her to tell her to see a doctor and she has been hurt by men before so she pulls a gun and gets him to get on his knees and just when we think she is going to kill him, she drives away.  This makes him realise that he really does want to keep the baby and make a family.

House - The Fix

There are three stories happening in this week's episode.  The first is a woman scientist who collapses and appears to be suffering from radiation poisoning.  Of course the team keep coming up with misdiagnoses until the end of the program and they find out she has been poisoned with Spanish Fly by her lover because she has been having an affair.  Ho Hum.
The second story is House and Wilson having a bet on a boxing match and House loses, but he is convinced the guy took a fall.  After meeting the boxer, he becomes convinced there is something medically wrong with him that caused him to collapse during the fight and not the 'knock-out' punch.  Of course, once again there are a number of theories until House works out what the real cause is.  Again, Ho Hum.
But the third story is the best of the lot.  We see House preparing a powder and then injecting it in his arm, like heroin.  Is this what he has been reduced to?  Is the pain in his leg this bad?  One day, Thirteen walks in on him while he is injecting and he reveals he doesn't want to increase his dependency on Vicodin and it is actually an experimental drug that has been successfully rebuilding damaged muscle in rats but he doesn't seem to think it is working on him, so he throws it all in the bin.  Later in the episode, he realises that he can support his weight on his leg without the use of his cane and he is pain free.   He ends up stealing some more of the experimental drug.  The episode finishes though with the scientist who is developing the drug, finding one of his rats dead.  Is House about to kill himself?

Glee - Funeral

The second last episode of the season, sees the Glee club preparing for the Nationals in New York when tragedy strikes someone near to them.  In order to win, Will hires Jesse St James to coach the team to win Nationals and he suggests they pick the strongest singer and build the performances around that person.  Of course, Santana, Mercedes and Kurt go up against Rachel but Jesse just rubbishes them (even through they are all excellent) as he wants Rachel to be the winner, and to get back with her.
Meanwhile, it is revealed that Sue's Down Syndrome afflicted sister, Jean, has passed away and Sue is devastated.  She doesn't know what to do to handle this great loss to her.  She loved her sister so much.  She sacks Becky from the Cheerios and reroutes the Glee Club's airline tickets to New York via Tripoli!!  Finn and Kurt offer to clear up Jeans belongings and Sue just wants everything thrown away.  The boys offer to organise Jean's funeral and while going through her belongings, they discover Jean's favourite movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, so they create a Wonka themed funeral which Sue is overwhelmed by and is incredibly thankful to the Glee club and Will for all they they did.
Afterwards, Finn breaks up with Quinn so he can pursue Rachel and Will decides to go against Jesse and let the club perform original songs as a group effort.
The National are upon us!

Revenge Of The Sith - Original Soundtrack

I've done reviews for the soundtracks for Episodes IV, V, & VI and now I am jumping to Episode III, Revenge Of The Sith.  I can't do Episodes I & II because I haven't bought them yet!  Yes, I know, and I call myself a fan.  Well if you are not happy with me now, you won't be happy with me after this brief review.
I actually didn't think much of the soundtrack to ROTS.
There I said it.  I can't believe after the brilliance of the original trilogy soundtracks, that this is a Star Wars soundtrack.  Comparing it to the other soundtracks, it sounds completely different to me.  It is very generic and could be the soundtrack to any modern sci-fi action adventure film, which is disappointing.
However, all is not lost.  To make up for a lacklustre soundtrack, there is a second disc included in this pack.  It is a DVD called 'Star Wars: A Musical Journey' and is the most awesome 70 minute film clip for the Star Wars Saga!  Don't worry about watching 6 x 2 minutes film trailers, do yourself a favour and buy this CD and jump straight to this DVD.  The best movie trailer ever!

Merlin - The Crystal Cave

Merlin and Arthur are attacked while in the forest and Arthur is shot in the back with an arrow.  Just when all hope is lost, an old man appears to heal him.  He takes Merlin in to a cave made of crystal, where magic originated from.  Merlin sees visions of the future in the crystals and interprets what he sees as Morgana killing Uther with a knife.  When Arther gives Morgana the same knife as a gift for her birthday, Merlin knows Uther's life is in peril.  How will he save Uther from Morgana without revealing his own magic?

Return Of The Jedi - Original Soundtrack

How do you follow up the brilliance that is the soundtrack to The Empire Strikes Back?  Put simply, you can't.  Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack to Return of the Jedi is very good, but it's just not as good as Empire.  It has a number of moments of absolute brilliance but the rest is a little less great, a bit like the movie itself.
I have to say, the first moment of pure brilliance is Into The Trap.  I just love this piece of music!  The 'chorus' if I can call it that, builds in intensity and each time it comes up, it builds even more.  Simply an exceptional music composition.  Rebel Briefing gives us a taste of The Empire Strikes Back.  But that's it.
There are no more iconic pieces that stand out as being memorable.  Even the Emperor's signature piece is not worthy of his nastiness. Much of this is a little, dare I say, 'cheesy', especially the Ewok music.  I must admit that this is a different film from Empire and so the music must reflect that, but not at the cost of quality music.  I feel some of this feels very mediocre.
Not as memorable or enjoyable as The Empire Strikes Back.  Such a shame really.

The Empire Strikes Back - Original Soundtrack

John Williams' follow up to the impressive Star Wars soundtrack is such an accomplished achievement and easily the best soundtrack from the series (which matches my feelings towards the films as well).  In three short years, he managed to make his original soundtrack sound like an amateur had composed it.  The Empire Strikes Back is a much more mature sound, much more confident and epic in its grandeur.  He has managed to take the themes from Star Wars and construct a more complex musical language to help tell the story.
The Imperial March would have to be as recognisable a piece from the Star Wars saga as the main theme is.  It immediately evokes feelings of dread and anticipation that something wicked this way comes.  But it's not simply a signature tune, it's BIG.  It's a Grand piece that embodies the majestic malevolence of Darth Vader.
Juxtaposed with this is Yoda's Theme.  A simply beautiful piece of music that is so melodic and yet so serene.  It can immediately reduce stress levels.  It is the music equivalent of Yoda.  Amongst the serenity, there is the heroic notes that tell us that not only can this 900+ year old wizard grant us peace, he is more than capable of single handedly rescuing us as well.   This piece is so sweetly handled.
Then there is The Asteroid Field.  A mix of Imperial March like music, the great lumbering Star Destroyers bearing down on our heroes as they attempt to escape.  Wonderful mixes string, brass and percussion.  The Love Theme between Han Solo and The Princess is a continuation of this theme while giving us the sweetness between our two lovers.
The Finale is a sweepingly brilliant theme that has a heavy thoughtfulness to it, leaving the audience to consider the price that our heroes have paid in their struggle against the Empire. Then, it drops back in to the familiar Star wars theme.  All will be well.
If you can only own one Star Wars soundtrack, make it The Empire Strikes Back, the best of an exceptional bunch.

Star Wars - Original Soundtrack

John Williams may not have invented soundtracks, but it sure feels like he did.  He is like a wizard, weaving his magic with his baton, creating iconic sounds that instantly evoke memories within people, transporting them back to another time and place, filled with happy memories.  Even if you have never seen the films, chances are you can identify the film just by hearing the smallest snippet of a John William's theme.  He may have frightened generations of swimmers with Jaws, but his truly iconic soundtrack is for the first truly blockbuster science fiction film event, Star Wars.  As soon as you hear the orchestra strike up, you know it's Star Wars and you can't help but smile. (A little tip, it's fantastic to listen to in the car while driving, but be wary of exceeding the speed limit!)
Mr Williams paints a picture with sound, creating individual pieces for characters or places.  Over two discs, you can literally see Princess Leia when you hear her theme, or you are standing in the rapidly cooling wind, staring at twin suns descending as Luke runs past to sound of The Robot Auction.  You are there!  And the Cantina Band is so wonderfully unique and yet once again, instantly recognisable!  While alien, you can certainly 'bop' along to it!
The triumphant The Last Battle leads into The Throne Room and End Title (who can't see the rows of soldiers in their finery in that massive hall?).  The End Title which is used in all the Star Wars films then gives a mix of all that has gone before.
Now having said all that, after over thirty years, this soundtrack, even with it's brilliance, does sound 'simple' compared to the later triumphs which build on this exceptional collection of music and do even greater things! That's not meant to be a criticism, but instead a compliment in that if this is John Williams at his 'simplest', imagine the brilliance of his more accomplished work, which I am very happy to say comes with the next couple of films.
I love everything Star Wars, so of course, I just love this soundtrack.

Supernatural - Mommy Dearest

I have to say, I was a little disappointed that the Eve storyline is already over.  Here we were in a new season with a new story following on from five years of story and the introduction of the "Mother of All"TM halfway through the season.  This was going to be a big bad bitch!  Hell, she brought all the monsters into existence!  Surely she will be a problem for the boys especially coming up to the season finale? Unfortunately it was not to be.
The story starts with the boys and Bobby and Castiel tracking her down to a small town where they find a local bar with everyone dead (well sort of).  Eve is starting to turn people into monster hybrids.  Anyway, the team is arrested, bar Dean by cops who are also hybrids.  The team kill all of the cops except one and Castiel gets some information from one of them as to where to find Eve, in a small diner.  There are two boys that the boys rescue and Dean gets them to a relative, only to discover later that Eve had already turned the youngest one who goes on a killing spree!
Eve tells them that Crowley is still alive and that his little plan is to get all the souls for himself for their power.  Eve wants to stop him with the help of the Winchesters. She even appears in the form of their own Mother, but still they won't play so Eve attacks Dean and tries to turn him into a hybrid only to find that he is poison to her.  You see it only took a swig of whisky mixed with some Phoenix ashes (which they got in a DeLorean.  Just kidding!  They had to time travel though!) and that was it!  Big Bad gone bye bye!  An incredible anti-climax.
But we still have three episodes of this season to go and the real story is just coming to the surface.  After getting the team out, Castiel returns to the diner to find Crowley, who he is working with!  Where the HELL is this going to lead?

The Basics - Stand Out/Fit In

Let me tell you, I have a pretty bland palate when it comes to music, so when my wife suggested I should listen to some guys playing at the Australia Day celebrations a few years ago, I was suddenly hooked.  Here were a trio of Aussie young guys, playing brand new music (which would normally be a definite no for me), but it had a 50's/60's surfer/rock n' roll edge while sounding incredibly fresh and a new sound for the new millennium.
We immediately started trying to track down their music on iTunes and one of their albums was this one.  It is such a brilliant mix of music genres and styles.
So why am I talking about a small indie group from Melbourne Australia?  They had one of my favourite songs off this album, Hey There!, feature in the Jason Statham movie, The Bank Job!   This is just so cool for these hard working boys from Down Under.  I recommend everyone have a listen to this song.  It has a Mariachi sound to start with but then gets into their usual three part harmonies.  Have a listen here: Hey There!
Hands down, these guys could be the best band in the world!  Just brilliant!

Merlin - Gwaine

While travelling the kingdom incognito, Arthur and Merlin end up in a bar fight and are assisted by a commoner named Gwaine who is an extraordinary swordsman.  Unfortunately he is badly injured and so Arthur takes him back to Camelot to recuperate and reward him for helping them.  Gwaine takes advantage of the prince's hospitality and racks up quite a bar tab at the local tavern for the prince to pay which doesn't endear him to Arthur.  He also flirts with Gwen!
Meanwhile two enemies of Arthur kill some knights who are on their way to Camelot for a contest where only blunt swords may be used.  However, they have acquired blades that look blunt but are very sharp (after killing the wizard who created them!).  Gwaine, who isn't allowed to be seen in Camelot anymore, saves Arthur again, with Merlin's help.
Another fine episode!  Slowly all the knights are being introduced.  I am really looking forward to the day this show gets to the point when Arthur becomes king and the Knights of the Round Table are brought together.  Oh, and Merlin gets to bring out his magic for good!

NCIS: Los Angeles - Harm's Way

This is a continuation of the storyline from the episode 'Lockup' where Sam infiltrated a terrorist group in prison while trying to save his his adopted 'brother', Moe.  While he was successful in convincing the leader that he was a bad guy, the leader tortured and killed Moe.  This is the episode where Same travels to Yemen to join the terrorist group and to bring the leader to justice.  Nate is back in this one too!
A really great storyline and a brilliant display of military hardware with the use of a laser pointer for a drone missile to give it pin-point accuracy to blow up a single jeep with the leader inside.  Spectacular!

House - Changes

This was unfortunately a pretty bland episode of House.  It stars Donal Logue (Life) as a man who won a lottery and is trying to find his lost high school love to share his money with.
The best part of this show was the return of Candice Bergen as Cuddy's mother who is suing for what was done to her in the hospital.  After a lot of fighting, she was wanting to get House and Cuddy to work together again instead of against each other.  Nice try.
Not the best episode.

NCIS: Los Angeles - Personal

While out for his morning jog, Deeks stops in to his local corner store for his usual morning pick-me-up only to discover an apparent robbery taking place.  His cop instincts kick in but not soon enough as he is shot and then the shooter stands over him and shoots again, this time point blank!
Kensi is rocked by this news as she has grown close to Deeks but also lost her last partner who was also shot.  After some investigation it is found that the car driven by the shooter was also outside Deeks apartment that morning, meaning this was not a random shooting at a robbery, but that they were waiting for him to arrive.
After tracking down the gang members, Sam and Callen discover the real target is Kensi in retaliation for saving and relocating the wife and child of a terrorist (this, if I remember, is from the end of season one).  Deeks was chosen because he is the newest member of team and has yet to learn how to change his routine every single day.
As the boys rush to the hospital, Kensi is leaving only to be ambushed in the hospital car park where a gun fight breaks out and just as one of the shooters is about to kill Kensi, he ends up being shot by Deeks, who has crawled out of his hospital bed.
This was a damn fine episode and like it's parent show, NCIS, has storylines that are linked to previous episodes, enhancing the continuity.  Keep up the great work!

NCIS: Los Angeles - Empty Quiver

This episode sees Sam and Callen as undercover CHiPs, California Highway Patrol motorcycle riders.  They are trying to find out who is organising cops to moonlight for criminals.  This episode highlights how underpaid our policemen and women are that some are forced to make ends meet by agreeing to assist criminals and make some extra money.  A truck load of radioactive material is stolen and the team has to track it down before it is used to make a bomb.
An OK episode.

NCIS - Pyramid

The season finale of one of the finest shows on television.  We get a conclusion and the commencement of a new tantalising storyline for next season.
When the team arrive to save Barret from her ambush, they find she is gone and one of her team dead and the other badly wounded.  Then the unthinkable, Ziva is lured into a trap when she thinks she is going to a hotel room to meet with Ray Cruz, it is actually Cobb waiting for her.  The team quickly discover her, alive, at Cobb's family farm but it was all a ruse to get the team out of NCIS so Cobb could infiltrate and get the people responsible for creating him.  He captures Kort and Jimmy Palmer.  The NCIS team finally discover the truth, that Vance, Kort and the current Secretary of the Navy secretly created the trained killers as part of 'Operation Frankenstein' to create a monster. It is revealed that Barret is the niece of the current Secretary of the Navy and the reason why she was put on the case and why Cobb has her in his clutches, to bring the SecNav out from his protection detail. They track Cobb down to the disused training facility where he is putting his captives through some of the hell he went through. After refusing to give up, Gibbs and Vance shoot Cobb dead. The SecNav resigns his position.
Mike Franks is given a state funeral and is buried in a casket that Gibbs was carving when Franks visited him.
However, the episode ends with DiNozzo being handed an covert assignment to investigate an NCIS agent who is suspected of selling classified information.  Who could this be? And DiNozzo gets another stab at working apart from Gibbs.  Where will this lead?  Can't wait for the new season!

NCIS - Swan Song

The explosive last two episodes of the eighth season of NCIS finally see the identity of the Port-To-Port Killer and the loss of a much loved character.
The owner of the eye that opens MTAC is revealed to belong to the team's sometimes partner/enemy, Trent Kort.  The eye patch wearing Kort reveals the P2P killer is an assassin created by the CIA, a Lt. Jonas Cobb.  He was put through the most horrendous training to become the trained killer he is, but now he is out to get the people who made him this way.
Mike Franks is visiting Gibbs and while Gibbs is in his basement doing some beautiful woodwork, Franks investigates something outside the house.  It turns out to be Cobb, who kills Franks after he injures him.  Gibbs is devastated and confronts Vance to tell him what is going on.  Vance reveals that E.J. Barrett was brought in on this assignment on orders that came from above Vance.
Cobb tricks Barrett into coming to an abandoned building to capture him but he successfully ambushes the team, taking them out one by one.  The episode ends with Cobb attacking Barrett.
What's Barrett's connection with Cobb and will he succeed in killing her?
A powerful episode with the death of a much loved Mike Franks.  Can't wait for the season finale!
