I took the kids to see this Aussie flick that seems to be breaking some records in the Aussie box office. You see, it is about a little red cattle dog that has no single master, back in 1970's Western Australia. He hitches a ride with a couple moving moving to Dampier in Western Australia. He moves from person to person, touching their lives and enriching it. He then meets American John, the local bus driver, who eventually befriends him and he is the closest he comes to having a master.
Don't be fooled by the sweet reviews and images, this movie has a sad centre that I was just not prepared for and I must say, I am not ashamed to say, I had a few tears flow.
The most amazing this about this film is that it is based on a book by a British author with a French name, Louis de Bernieres, which in turn is based on the recollections of the locals of Dampier and the surrounding areas of the true story of Red Dog!
This is a great looking film, filled with the magnificent reds of the Western Australian desert, juxtaposed with the blues of the dangerous nearby ocean. It has a great 70's Aus Rock soundtrack too.
The film stars, American Josh Lucas (Hulk) as John, Aussies Rachel Taylor (Transformers) as his love interest Nancy, Noah Taylor (Tomb Raider) as Jack the person who bring Red Dog to Dampier, Luke Ford (The Mummy 3) as Thomas the truckie who comes to town and the story of Red Dog is told to and Keisha Castle-Hughes from the exceptional Whale Rider.
It also has the indomitable Bill Hunter in his second last role before he sadly passed away.
I really enjoyed this film. It's an Aussie film that dispenses with the silly OTT Aussie stereotypes while maintaining definitive Aussie characters. A wonderful family film that will have you laughing, cheering and crying. 9/10
